In the heart of Genoa’s historic center, just a few steps from Porta Soprana, lies one of the city’s most fascinating and symbolic places: the House of Christopher Columbus.
According to tradition, it was here that the young Columbus spent part of his childhood, wandering the alleys of the Superba, breathing in the scent of the sea, and listening to the stories of merchants and sailors from across the Mediterranean. It’s easy to imagine that it was within these very walls that the dream of exploring distant lands was born.
The house we can visit today is an 18th-century reconstruction built on the remains of the original medieval building, which was destroyed during French bombings in the 17th century. Despite this, it still retains the authentic charm of ancient Genoa, with its stone walls, arches, and narrow stairways.
Visiting this place is like taking a small journey through time, stepping into the daily life of one of the most famous figures in world history. Around the house, one of the most evocative corners of the city unfolds, between Porta Soprana, the ancient medieval walls, and the nearby Sant’Andrea Cloister.
